First Building in Canada to benefit from this award-winning destination dispatch system. Transforms the way occupants navigate and move around the building. Increases efficiency and energy savings.
MORRISTOWN, NJ – March 6, 2012 – Schindler Elevator Corporation has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Liberty Development Corporation to supply and install 29 elevators and four escalators at World on Yonge in Toronto, Ontario. World on Yonge is the 2010 winner of the ”Places to Grow Community of the Year,” a 1.5 million square foot true mixed-use development which supports sustainable technology and contains substantial green space in Toronto. Upon completion in 2014, the ten-acre World on Yonge complex will offer residential condominium, commercial/office/hotel, and retail space in six buildings.
Urban mobility in the high-rise office building on Yonge Street, which consists of office space and a hotel, will run on Schindler’s intuitive PORT (Personal Occupant Requirement Terminal) Technology, the company’s third generation destination dispatch system that makes possible a truly networked environment that recognizes occupants and responds to their individual needs. World on Yonge is the first building in Canada to benefit from the power of the PORT system.
PORT Technology functions as a two-way communication interface between the occupants and World on Yonge’s environment. The system’s visible aspect is a sleek, futuristic interface positioned at access points and elevators around the building. Behind the stylish touch screen is a powerful software system, capable not only of calculating the optimum route to any destination within the building, but also of “learning” how its occupants typically move around.
With this information, PORT Technology primes the elevators to direct and transport people quickly and safely to their individual destinations. Furthermore, Schindler’s patented technology works with RFID badges to identify passengers and call elevators for personal service. “What makes Schindler’s PORT system special is the ease with which World on Yonge managers can design applications to accommodate a wide range of needs in real time,” says Jeff Coles, president, Schindler Elevator in Toronto. “Whether it’s helping to meet new energy- efficiency goals, updating security, scheduling maintenance or adapting to people with special needs, unprecedented levels of customization can be achieved.”
PORT Energy-Saving Features
Schindler 7000 custom high-rise elevators will transport occupants to their destinations throughout World on Yonge. Using the latest technology in elevator design and highly efficient permanent magnet motors, Schindler 7000 elevators feature Power Factor 1 drives that reduce energy consumption by up to 35% compared to standard drives and regenerate energy back into the building’s electrical system. The recovered energy can be used to power other building demands such as lighting, air conditioning or other equipment. The Power Factor 1 drive generates less heat, providing additional savings through reduced cooling requirements for the machine room.
“As a developer of award winning mixed-use communities, we believe our choice for Schindler’s PORT system will be in synchronicity with the development goals of World on Yonge: to provide users with opportunities for energy efficiency and provide 100% uptime for users of all features of this large scale development that allows for live, work and play,” says Marco Filice, vice president and counsel, Liberty Development Corporation.
